FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Alhambra Owner’s Guide

FAAC keypad and intercom repair in Alhambra typically runs $285-$520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a worn keypad, a failed intercom module, or both. Most jobs are completed in a single visit, and we carry FAAC-compatible keypads, intercom boards, and wiring harnesses on the truck so you aren’t waiting on a warehouse. The usual story we hear: the keypad stops responding on certain keys, the intercom rings but the voice is faint or crackled, or the gate won’t open from the house after years of working fine. If that sounds familiar, we can usually diagnose it on the first call.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We work on FAAC gate keypads and intercoms across the residential lines you actually find in Alhambra driveways: the FAAC 404, 412, 415, and 422 operator series, the E024U and E124 control boards, plus the FAAC XK series keypads and the older T12 and T21 keypad housings. The compatibility gotcha with FAAC is the voltage: older keypads wired for 12V DC will not tolerate the 24V DC output on newer FAAC boards, and swapped-in keypads burn out within weeks when the voltage is mismatched. We check the board output first. For intercoms, the main split is between analog two-wire systems and the newer FAAC IP modules, and you cannot mix those. We stock OEM FAAC parts alongside quality aftermarket equivalents and will tell you which one makes sense for your age of system. Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider and not affiliated with FAAC, which is why we stock parts for three other automation brands on the truck: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls.

Signs Your FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keys work intermittently or not at all. The carbon pads inside the keypad wear unevenly, and the outer columns usually fail first because those are the numbers people hit from driver’s seat height. A cleaning will sometimes buy a month; a new keypad fixes it for another eight to ten years.
  • The intercom rings but the audio is faint, buzzing, or one-way. FAAC intercom modules run on aging capacitors, and in Alhambra’s summer heat those capacitors dry out faster than the manufacturer’s lifespan estimate. The result is the voice fades or drops out entirely while the ringer still works.
  • The gate opens from the keypad but not from the house intercom, or vice versa. That usually points to a failed relay on the intercom board, not the operator itself. We see this most often on systems installed 15 or more years ago, wired into the original FAAC 412 board.
  • The keypad beeps but the gate ignores it after heavy rain. Water intrusion at the wire seals is a common failure with FAAC keypads mounted on an eastern-facing Alhambra stucco wall, where the morning marine layer sits on the housing for hours. The beep works because the tone circuit is separate from the output relay.
  • You need to press a key multiple times or press harder than you used to. The tactile dome switches inside the keypad lose their snap with age, and the harder people press, the faster the remaining keys degrade. This is the stage where replacement is cheaper than continued frustration.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For an Alhambra home, figure on $285-$520 for FAAC keypad and intercom repair, installed. A straightforward keypad-only swap is at the lower end: $285-$380, including the new keypad or membrane, wiring terminations, and matching the voltage to your FAAC board. An intercom module replacement lands between $360 and $520, depending on whether we’re replacing the audio board alone or the full handset and door station assembly. What drives the range: your FAAC model age, whether the wire run is buried under a driveway or accessible in a junction box, and whether the existing housing needs cleanup or replacement. Every price is quoted and agreed before any work starts. No line item appears on the bill that wasn’t on the written estimate. The work is protected by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the obvious things: confirm the keypad has not been submerged, check that the wire nuts at the junction box are dry and tight, and see if the intercom handset is seated properly in its cradle. Past that, we’d suggest calling rather than opening the keypad housing yourself. FAAC keypads run on low-voltage DC, but probing the wrong terminal on the control board can short the board itself, turning a $300 keypad job into a $900 control board replacement. The intercom modules carry board-level components that are not field-replaceable without soldering equipment and a schematic. If the keypad or intercom is doing something strange, call us at (747) 277-8422 and describe it. Victor Salinas grew up in Alhambra, not far from Almansor Park, learning ironwork from his uncle, and he still answers the phone the same way: tell me what the gate is doing, and I will tell you what it needs - no more, no less.
